Introduction | Spalding University Policy Guide

2.0: Introduction

Volume III of the Policy Manual has been prepared by Spalding University (the “University”) to provide information to all University employees regarding general University employment policies and procedures. It is applicable to all full-time, part-time, exempt and non-exempt University employees. Additional policies that pertain only to members of the faculty are provided in the Faculty Governance Document and Volume IV (Faculty Personnel Policies), and policies that pertain only to staff employees are provided in Volume V (Personnel Policies for Staff). Policies (such as health and safety policies) that affect all members of the University community (including students) are set forth in Volume II (Campus Community Policies).

Volume III supersedes all previous employment handbooks or written employment policies. In the event of a conflict between Volume III and any other University policy document, the terms of Volume III shall govern.

Volume III is not a contract of employment and nothing herein shall be construed as a guarantee of continued employment or an employment contract. Unless an employee has a written contract with the University which expressly states otherwise, the employment relationship between the University and its employees is employment-at-will. This means an employee can terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason or no reason and the University can terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason or no reason. Any oral or written statements or promises to the contrary made to any prospective or existing employee are hereby expressly disavowed and should not be relied upon by any prospective or existing employee. All written employee contracts must be signed by the President or the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The University has made this edition of Volume III of the Policy Manual as comprehensive as possible; however, it is not possible to foresee every situation that may occur. Circumstances not specifically addressed in the Policy Manual will be handled on a case by case basis, in accordance with established practice. Any questions regarding the information contained in Volume III of the Policy Manual shall be referred to Human Resources. Though the University intends to continue the policies and procedures described in Volume III, the University reserves the right to revise, amend or discontinue them at any time. The most current policies and procedures can be found on the University’s website at www.spalding.edu.

All University employees are expected to read Volume III, be familiar with its contents, and execute the Acknowledgement of Receipt document in Appendix 3.0.1.
