3.0: Introduction
The information contained in Volume V applies to Spalding University staff members only. It has been developed for use by University employees who do not hold faculty appointments. Policies that pertain specifically to faculty are contained in the Faculty Governance Document and Volume IV of the Policy Manual. Volume III of the Policy Manual sets forth University employment policies that pertain to all University employees, including faculty members. General policies that affect all members of the campus community (including students, staff, faculty and visitors) are set forth in Volume II of the Policy Manual. Volume V supersedes all previous employment handbooks or written employment policies. In the event of a conflict between Volume V and any other University policy document, the terms of Volume V shall govern.
Volume V is not a contract of employment and nothing herein shall be construed as a guarantee of continued employment or an employment contract. Unless an employee has a written contract with the University which expressly states otherwise, the employment relationship between the University and its employees is employment-at-will. This means an employee can terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason or no reason and the University can terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason or no reason. Any oral or written statements or promises to the contrary made to any prospective or existing employee are hereby expressly disavowed and should not be relied upon by any prospective or existing employee. All written employee contracts must be signed by the President or the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.
The University has made this edition of Volume V of the Policy Manual as comprehensive as possible; however, it is not possible to foresee every situation that may occur. Circumstances not specifically addressed in the Policy Manual will be handled on a case by case basis, in accordance with established practice. Any questions regarding the information contained in Volume V of the Policy Manual shall be referred to Human Resources. Though the University intends to continue the policies and procedures described in Volume V, right to improve, modify, revoke, suspend, terminate, or change any or all policies, procedures, rules or benefit in whole or part in Volume V of the Policy Manual, without notice, and to implement such changes prior to the publication of a new Policy Manual. Whenever possible, the University will make an effort to inform members of the campus community of changes to the policies and procedures contained in this Policy Manual prior to implementation of the changes. The most current policies and procedures can be found on the University’s website at www.spalding.edu.
All University staff employees are expected to read Volume VI, be familiar with its contents, and execute the Acknowledgement of Receipt document in Appendix 5.0.1.
